Jewellery Care 101 - How to Keep Your Pieces Looking Their Best

Your jewellery tells a story. Whether it's a custom engagement ring, a family heirloom, or a favourite everyday piece, it deserves proper care to keep it shining for years to come. At Meaden, we craft fine jewellery designed to be worn and loved, but even the most beautifully made pieces need a little maintenance. Here’s our expert guide to jewellery care.

1. Clean Your Jewellery Regularly

Build-up from lotions, skin oils, and everyday dirt can dull the sparkle of your diamonds and gemstones. To clean your jewellery at home, use a bowl of warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Soak the piece for a few minutes, then gently brush with a soft toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Avoid harsh cleaners or anything abrasive, especially on softer stones or gold. If you are unsure, bring it to our Auckland workshop and we will clean it professionally and safely.

2. Store It Properly

Jewellery can scratch, tangle, or tarnish if stored carelessly. Keep each piece in a soft pouch or its own box to avoid contact with other metals and gemstones. For necklaces, always clasp them before storing to prevent knots.

3. Know When to Take It Off

Jewellery may be precious, but it is not indestructible. Remove your rings, bracelets, and necklaces before swimming, cleaning, or gardening. Chlorine, sweat, and household chemicals can damage metals and loosen stones over time.

We also recommend removing jewellery before sleeping, especially delicate chains and rings with fine settings.

4. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Even the most durable jewellery can loosen or wear with time. If you wear your engagement ring or wedding band daily, it’s important to have it checked by a professional at least once a year. Our team at Meaden can assess the setting, tighten stones, polish the metal, and replate white gold when needed.

This kind of preventative care helps protect the long-term value and integrity of your jewellery.

5. Insure and Document

For significant or sentimental pieces, insurance offers peace of mind. Take clear photos, keep appraisals up to date, and store important receipts or certificates. If you ever need to replace or repair a piece, proper documentation is key.
