The Sneaky Guide to Finding Their Ring Size Before You Propose

Proposing is such a special moment, one you’ll both remember forever. But there’s just one little challenge… finding out their ring size without spoiling the surprise!

It might seem tricky, but don’t worry. There are plenty of subtle ways to figure it out, and we’re here to help.

1. Borrow a Ring They Already Wear

This is the classic move. If your partner already wears a ring on their ring finger, borrow it when they’re not looking and take it to a jeweller to be measured.

2. Trace the Ring on Paper

If you can’t take the ring for long, simply grab a piece of paper and trace around the inside and outside of the ring. This will give a jeweller a rough idea of the size without needing the ring itself.

3.  Make an Impression

Another clever trick is to gently press the ring into a bar of soap, Blu-Tack, or soft clay. It leaves an impression that a jeweller can use to estimate the diameter and size.

4. Use the String Trick

If you can be a little sneaky, the string method is a great option.

Here’s how to do it:

  • While they’re asleep or distracted, gently wrap a piece of string, or even a thin strip of paper, around their ring finger.

  • Mark the spot where the string meets with a pen.

  • Measure the string with a ruler (in millimetres is best).

  • Bring this measurement to a jeweller, and they’ll help match it to the correct ring size.

Tip: Don’t pull the string too tight! You want it to fit comfortably, but still be able to slip over the knuckle easily.

5. Get a Professional Opinion

If all else fails, don’t panic. Bring a photo of your partner’s hands to a jeweller, and they can usually make a pretty good estimate.

It’s not perfect, but it’s much better than guessing blind.

Finding their ring size without giving the game away might feel like a challenge, but with a little creativity and care, it’s absolutely possible. Whether you borrow a ring, trace it, try the string trick, or get a professional opinion, there are plenty of subtle ways to get it right.

And remember, if the size isn’t perfect on the day, it can always be adjusted. What matters most is the love behind the gesture and the moment you create together.
