The 4 C’s of Diamonds

Cut is the most important factor in a diamond’s brilliance. It refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted, which directly affects how it interacts with light.

A well-cut diamond reflects light with life and sparkle, creating brightness and fire. Even with high colour or clarity, a poorly cut stone can appear flat. Cut is what brings a diamond to life.

Diamond colour refers to the absence of visible colour within the stone. The less colour present, the more rare the diamond.

Grading ranges from D (colourless) through to Z (light yellow or brown tones). Subtle variations often go unnoticed once set, and the right choice usually comes down to personal preference and design style.

Clarity measures natural inclusions formed during a diamond’s creation deep within the earth. These are unique to each stone and often invisible to the naked eye.

While higher clarity grades indicate fewer inclusions, many have no impact on appearance once the diamond is cut and set. At Meaden, we prioritise diamonds that appear clean, balanced and visually pure.

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight and often influences its size. However, two diamonds of the same carat can look very different depending on their cut and proportions.

For this reason, carat is always considered alongside the other C’s to ensure the diamond feels balanced within the final design, rather than simply chasing size.

The 4 C’s work together, not in isolation. A diamond with slightly lower grades can often appear more beautiful than one with higher specifications if the proportions and light performance are stronger.
